Imagine a river with gentle sloping banks, boats, gardens and cafés running through the centre of Newton Abbot. It nearly happened.
An 1870 plan covered the river Lemon and ended any opportunity for Newton Abbot to have a river with sloping banks, flower beds and cafés as its central feature.

Even after retirement the dread of going into work on Monday still haunts me; why is working life often so unpleasant?
I enjoyed about 10 years or so of my working life. The rest was dull or unpleasant; perhaps I am just unlucky, but poor management seems to have played a role.
