When I sit down to write my Morning Thoughts I have no idea what will pop into my mind or the route my thoughts will take. My diary entries simply record what is on my mind and reference many years of personal knowledge, insight and experience. I also like to keep them brief; they are not essays after all!

I write my Morning Thoughts (and many other items) on Substack and, if I find the time, I also copy and paste them onto this – my personal website. Please consider subscribing to my Substack page – colinjanderson.substack.com – it’s free! The sheer volume of lies, misinformation, hate and advertisements on Facebook has been getting me down, so the more family and friends who subscribe to my Substack page the sooner I can close down my Facebook page.

  • Civilised Politics!

My mind is this morning drifting from one trivial matter to another, but begins to focus on a feint glimmer of hope: that politics may become slightly more civilised and slightly less confrontational.

  • Coastal Living!

I haven’t decided if I will venture into town today or tomorrow, but whatever I do I must visit the tropical fish shop in town – I need something to clear the pond. That led me to thoughts on living near water.

  • Why Diary?

I found myself celebrating the end of the heatwave and looking forward to a week of ‘normal’ weather before the next heatwave arrives in a week or so. In so doing I somehow got onto the subject of why I write in my diary at all.

  • Failure to Act?

I have been getting angrier during the week listening to the Radio 4 news, as one ‘expert’ after another is asked what solutions are available to avoid the worst effects of heatwaves. The answers have been known for 30 years. We could have started building climate-resilient homes 30 years ago, but chose not to. Why?

  • Celsius 450!

Feeling glad that the end of the heatwave is in sight and thinking about returning to usual routines, including reading my current book, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Written in 1953 the dysfunctional society it created reminds me of today…

  • Normal Weather?

This heatwave has taught me that I really must get as much work as I can completed by mid-day. Afternoons and evenings are a sloth-like washout. It crossed my mind that ‘normal’ weather days will continue to exist for some years, despite the ever-increasing mayhem we will have to suffer.

  • Coping with Heat?

I coped with the heat yesterday, albeit with discomfort and body-stress. Today temperatures will not only be higher but they are building upon the heat gain of yesterday, making matters worse. This cumulative effect could be difficult to live with. Literally.

  • Home or Seaside?

There is a pleasant breeze in the morning, but from mid-afternoon on it will be unbearably hot. Unbearable for me that is. I momentarily imagine a trip to a seaside pub, but is it really a good idea?

  • UPVC Off-gassing!

Up early to enjoy a little coolth before the heat of the day and I notice indoor air quality is not as good as it usually is. I know why, but there is nothing I can do about it. It all comes down to poor house building standards and use of cheap and nasty building…

  • Rest & Relaxation!

I am looking forward to a day of restfulness and boredom.

  • Food Riots?

I was thinking this morning about something as innocent as keeping cool indoors during the upcoming heatwave. I can cope with that, but agriculture is increasingly unable to. I can do something about the temperature in my home, but feel helpless in the face of future food shortages and food riots.

  • Homing Instinct?

I am lost in a labyrinthine hotel which is also my home, desperately trying to return to my room but never reaching it…
