Morning Thoughts From A Devon Sitting Room

When I sit down to write my Morning Thoughts I have no idea what will pop into my mind or the route my thoughts will take, sometimes making connections that surprise even me! My diary entries simply record what is on my mind and reference many years of personal knowledge, insight and experience ‘off the top of my head’ rather than any other source. I also like to keep them brief; they are not essays after all!

I write my Morning Thoughts (and many other items) on Substack and, if I find the time, I also copy and paste them onto this – my personal website. Please consider subscribing to my Substack page – colinjanderson.substack.com – it’s free! The sheer volume of lies, misinformation, hate and advertisements on Facebook has been getting me down, so the more family and friends who subscribe to my Substack page the sooner I can close down my Facebook page.

  • Dark Clouds Overhead?

This morning I feel guilty for spending money in town yesterday on a magazine and other non-essentials I have no budget for. My inability to restrain myself gets me down.

  • Noon!

Meet you at noon… Seems innocuous but why not just say 12 o’clock if that is what you mean? Noon today at my location is 13:10, but it seems most people do not think of noon in the same way as me.

  • Flowers for Pain?

I have pain in the lower back and, for some reason I found myself taking a colchicine tablet this morning, which I keep in stock for the occasional attack of gout.

  • Forever Artificial?

There has been a lot of discussion recently about our dependence on petro-chemicals, which marketeers have led us to believe make ‘cheap’ products that are better than the natural products we have used for millennia, and which improve our lives. All lies of course, but many of us seem to have fallen for it.

  • Morning Coffee?

Sipping a ‘regular’ cappuccino this morning made me think about some of the snobbery surrounding coffee. I like most of it, but draw the line at a coffee imposter.

  • Sun Hats for Joe 90!

Tis a sunny day in Devon and, upon venturing out, I shall wear a hat! Being sensitive to the sun may seem odd for someone born in sunny south Devon, but in the summer you will find me in the dark and not out in the pub beer garden…

  • Standing Charge?

I managed to spend only 3p on gas yesterday, but my energy company will take 33p from me. Why? Because of the Standing Charge – which I think should be higher! BUT… it also needs to be fairer.

  • Coffee in Superposition!

My thoughts take a quantum turn this morning as I find myself staring at my library of books straight ahead of me. My brain seems to hold two opposing thoughts simultaneously…

  • Politicians: Lead or Follow?

People go to the polls in some parts of the country today, but not in my part of Devon. I feel desperately sad that politicians have become followers rather than leaders. Instead of engaging with us and informing our opinions they simply accommodate us and any irrational, irrelevant or downright vile thoughts some of us…

  • Dispirited?

I am feeling glum this morning but do not wish to dwell on my misery. I suspect that by mid-afternoon – if I am left alone – I shall be feeling better. Finding the right landlord would be a major boon!

  • Hedgehogs… aided by Pixies?!

I have a mystery! A tray of water I left on the ground near the pond for birds to drink from has moved three metres from where I set it down. Hedgehog droppings have appeared on a park bench next to the pond that no hedgehog could possibly have climbed. Were they aided by pixies?

  • The End?

I am two-thirds of the way through a book and, seeing it left open and page-down on the settee this morning, somehow reminded me of a similar book I read some years ago. Both books are strangely strikingly similar but also strikingly different.
