This is a bit of fairly recent nostalgia for me as I bank with the Co-op and have done for some decades, opening my first account at Walthamstow (East London) in the late 1970’s. This was a very handy, very helpful and very friendly branch that I visited regularly. Sadly, like so many other banks it closed some years ago.
The most recent closure – in May 2026 – was the Santander, but perhaps the most shocking departure was Barclays, a substantial 4-storey white marble building now converted into flats. We are left with NatWest, HSBC, Halifax and Lloyds (have I left any out?) of which Lloyds is my favourite building; I might feature that in a future photo in this series.
