Morning Thoughts From A Devon Sitting Room

When I sit down to write my Morning Thoughts I have no idea what will pop into my mind or the route my thoughts will take, sometimes making connections that surprise even me! My diary entries simply record what is on my mind and reference many years of personal knowledge, insight and experience ‘off the top of my head’ rather than any other source. I also like to keep them brief; they are not essays after all!

I write my Morning Thoughts (and many other items) on Substack and, if I find the time, I also copy and paste them onto this – my personal website. Please consider subscribing to my Substack page – colinjanderson.substack.com – it’s free! The sheer volume of lies, misinformation, hate and advertisements on Facebook has been getting me down, so the more family and friends who subscribe to my Substack page the sooner I can close down my Facebook page.

  • Walkable Towns?

This morning I am waiting for a much-needed grocery delivery, which triggered a train of thought about walkable towns – and how good they would be for our physical and mental health, sociability and economy. But its only a dream…

  • Crashing Curtains!

Sometimes trivial things can get you down. Yesterday I went from being pleased with myself to tearful in seconds, just because a pair of curtains – and the pole and fixings – came crashing to the ground.

  • Mortality & Home

I was born in Newton Abbot hospital and I was reminded this morning of a thought from some years ago about wanting to live there. Not the hospital, but a flat that my old maternity ward was converted into. Does that seem strange?

  • Gas, Lies & Jolly Japes

These days it feels like every day is All Fool’s Day, as so many people are fooled by preposterous but strangely believable lies. Today I am celebrating, but in a very low-key manner.

  • Nervous Sleep!

This morning I have dry, heavy, sore eyes – a symptom common in my working life and which I attributed to getting up unnaturally – when a clock said so rather than when my body. I am glad those days are over, but every now and again they return…

  • Apps – Rent or Buy?

After returning this morning from a walk I found myself thinking about something that has been nagging me for a long time: do I take the plunge and buy software to replace what I have been using for 20 years, in order to save the monthly subscription?

  • Distracted Politicians?

What if… we followed the science and started building homes in 2000 that would provide a healthy and comfortable environment for the end of the 21st. century? Politicians failed to act – and continue to do so. They are all too easily distracted from science, facts, knowledge and evidence by the super-rich.

  • Dark Times?

My thoughts this morning turned to a lightbulb moment I had over ten years ago, when a convergence of disparate knowledge and insight led me to see parallels between a dark period in the distant past and the present.

  • Let’s Build More Cold Homes!

I was hoping to do almost nothing today but nearly all of my preferred activities are sedentary. It is cold – inside and out – and I am reminded of how we are incapable of building energy efficient homes, unlike so many other (colder) countries.

  • Character Flaws?

I am looking forward to venturing into town today after three weeks isolation at home. Why do I venture out so infrequently?

  • Changing Plans?

After two false starts I will today be cooking Mother’s Day dinner for my mother. I have this morning postponed tomorrow’s planned visit into town – after 3 weeks of isolation. Plan do not always go – according to plan, but when you are retired it seems to matter little.

  • Cold Home – Warm Garden!

It is cold indoors (as usual) but warm outside in the sun. So why am I indoors writing this?
