When I sit down to write my Morning Thoughts I have no idea what will pop into my mind or the route my thoughts will take, sometimes making connections that surprise even me! My diary entries simply record what is on my mind and reference many years of personal knowledge, insight and experience ‘off the top of my head’ rather than any other source. I also like to keep them brief; they are not essays after all!

I write my Morning Thoughts (and many other items) on Substack and, if I find the time, I also copy and paste them onto this – my personal website. Please consider subscribing to my Substack page – colinjanderson.substack.com – it’s free! The sheer volume of lies, misinformation, hate and advertisements on Facebook has been getting me down, so the more family and friends who subscribe to my Substack page the sooner I can close down my Facebook page.

Weeds & Mould!
Respite from rain has not yet resulted in dry ground. Conditions have led to enormous weeds in the garden, and the germination of mould spores in the home. Which do I tackle first?

Life-saving Critics!
I find myself thinking about the time I have wasted watching films, reading books or listening to music I do not enjoy. Life is too short. A filter of some kind is required.

Economising!
Having a shower and washing clothes on the same day seems a bit extravagant, so to balance the books I think I might have a can of soup for dinner!

Weather Forecast!
Some of my grand-parents generation made their own weather forecasts based on reading a barometer. No app was required. But now, even with more data at our finger tips, some people seem incapable of making a sensible forecast, and even blame it on the app!

Dull Routine?
This morning I was thinking that my life has become rather dull and routine. However, my working life was also routine, and sometimes dull. There is a key difference between working life and retired life.

Wild Garlic Anyone?
Over the last five years or so my lawn has shrunk and now starts over a metre away from the fence. Why? Because of wild garlic. Within a few years my entire garden will be a sort of wild garlic monoculture, which I am not keen on.

The Fading Icy Grip of Winter?
Spring is fresh, dewy and new, but winter still has a bit of bite left, nipping at the heels of the adolescent upstart that will, any day now, consign it to oblivion. It took some time for me to switch on the heating this morning, and now my hard-earned cash is flowing out to oil…

Brain Activity?
Many of the tasks that require brain activity seem to occur in the morning, but I have many different ways to stave off any possible decline in mental health.

Energy Vampires!
When you are on a low income energy vampires in the home become an expense that we can do without. I kill them most nights before I go to bed.

What Is A Day?
There is human time and there is natural time, and they are slightly different in duration. Is our definition of how we split time duration into days important?

Breakfast at 1?
Morning Thoughts From A Devon Sitting Room No.94: Is breakfast really the most important meal of the day for everyone? I did not ‘break my fast’ until 5pm yesterday and today I feel slightly better and have lost a little weight. Perhaps it is time to move away from a one size fits all approach…

Dog Fog!
Morning Thoughts From A Devon Sitting Room No.93: a dog barking in the fog set off a chain of thoughts that led to what felt like an idea for a horror film.
