Newton Abbot in Old Pictures No.6: Demolition of the Royal Mail Sorting Office, 2005

A modern building that was already being demolished in 2005 – to make way for Asda. This was the old GPO sorting office for Newton Abbot and surrounding area, which was relocated to the Brunel industrial estate right next to the railway station. The new location is geographically more sensible although not ideal, unless we see the return of mail trains? That would be a welcome boost to the railways – and relief for overcrowded roads.

Demolition did not take long; this is the front of the building still relatively intact – picture taken on the same day as that above in July 2005.
