USA 2016 part 1: 11th November @ 09:06 – Newton Abbot railway station
I made it to the station with my bags – all two of them – in good time for the train. A sense of relief as I enjoy the morning sun and the post-rush hour hush on the London-bound platform at Newton Abbot railway station. I was up at 2am this morning – New York time – and should arrive in Queens at about 9pm local time – 1am Devon time. Sixteen hours on various forms of transport – from train to bus, bus to plane, plane to cab… so much could go wrong!
It is not every day I board a train in Devon with a final destination in New York. I am excited and anxious in pretty much equal measure: too much could go wrong; the train might be late, the bus to the airport might be delayed, I might miss the plane… I try not to think about it.
The journey is already faltering; my heart rate is up, as is – I suspect – my blood pressure. Digital screens are telling me the London train is delayed by about 12 minutes – so far. Scratch that: it’s now 15 minutes late. Will I get to Reading on time – or will I miss the airport bus?
Background
These posts are from a diary I kept of my journey to the USA to visit friends of my wife, who passed away in 2015. The trip was to only three locations: New York, Minneapolis and Las Vegas, and was the first where I was without a travel companion. However, I met up with my son in Vegas as well as an old friend from university who I had not seen in over 25 years. Like all my trips to the US I enjoyed it immensely.
