Newton Abbot in Old Pictures: The Globe Hotel To Let, 1992

Compare this with the previous photo in this series, taken in 1981. The Globe Hotel is sadly gone and you can clearly see the ‘To Let’ sign (if you click on the photo to enlarge it). We did not know at the time that it would be purchased by the Austin family and become the cookware, fabrics, soft furnishings, small appliances and other wondrous sections of the Austin’s Department Store.

I took this photo in July 1992 at the time of the annual carnival procession, which was considerably larger and more impressive then compared to now. As you can see it was not a good day for photography, being dark and moody – in July!

I have many photos to share, which will form a new article in the not too distant future. Just as soon as I can get around to re-scanning the negatives in HDR RAW!
